Freestone Peaches
Taste: When ripened to plush softness on the tree, the Early Redhavens are completely freestone, but because they’re often picked slightly early the flesh clings slightly to the pit. These peaches are sweet and juicy.
Nutritional Info:
Peaches are rich in phytochemicals called phenols that act as antioxidants
Peaches help in maintaining healthy skin owing to the presence of a good amount of vitamin C, which also provides a defense against harmful free radicals and infections
Peaches are rich in beta-carotene, which plays an important role in maintaining healthy eyesight
When to look for Early Redhaven Peaches: As their name suggests, these peaches ripen earlier than their parent Redhavens by about 2 weeks. Look for them in July.
Best Uses for Early Redhaven Peaches: Redhavens aren’t usually used for canning because of their tendency to have “split pits,” and this tendency is even more pronounced in Early Redhavens. These peaches have slightly courser flesh that holds up great in pies and cobblers, and is delicious eaten fresh out of hand.
How to Store Early Redhaven Peaches: Ripe peaches should be stored in your refrigerator. If they need a bit of softening, place them in a paper bag and keep them on your counter for a day or so.
