Transparent Apples
Taste: It’s a pale green or yellow apple that turns white or cream-colored on the sunny side. This paleness is what inspired its name, although the skin is rather thick and is not actually transparent. The apple tastes different from other apples, which are high in sugar content and mild in flavor. Transparent has a high acid content, which gives it an invigoratingly tart “zing” combined with a soft crunch very similar to Granny Smith.
Nutritional Info:
Good source of soluble and insoluble fiber
B-complex vitamins (riboflavin, thiamin, and vitamin B-6)
When To Find Transparent Apples: Transparent is an early summer apple, and can be found as early as the last week of July.
Best Uses for Transparent Apples: The Transparent was valued during the canning craze of the late 19th and 20th century because it retained its shape and flavor when cooked. The high acid content also prevented it from browning. Use this tart, firm apple to flavor pies, compotes, or for an old-fashioned twist, stewed spiced apples.
How to Store Transparent Apples: Unfortunately, Transparent apples are not good for storage. It's best to eat this apple in the first week. Keep these apples in your refrigerator.
